What does MF Doom use to make beats?
In an interview with Wax Poetics,
MF Doom recalled the gear he used during his KMD days:
DOOM: "We used the
[Akai] MPC60 to sequence. And the FZ-10, the Casio rack-mount version of the FZ-1. We had that, the keyboard version, before we got the MPC. But it didn't have any sequence capabilities. The MPC sequencer was the illest one, since the Alesis…the joint that come with the drum machine, the
[Alesis] HR-16. That was first. What am I talking about, O? The HR-16, the plastic one… You had the one with a drum machine on one side, and you could sequence on the other side. But you had to buy both of 'em though."
By the time Operation Doomsday came out, Doom had upgraded his setup as stated in another interview posted on angelfire/ca5:
DOOM: "I did all the of album on the Roland VS 1681 as far as recording and
[Akai] MPC2000 studio plus. Did all the tricks on those two bad boys."
An unconfirmed poster on the MPC Forums quoted Doom saying the following to Wax Poetics while promoting Madvillain:
DOOM: "... I used the 404 and the
[akai] mpc 1000 with the JJ OS in it - that's what makes the machine as versatile as I need it to be."
Q: "Wait, what's the JJ OS?"
DOOM: "Well, from what I read, it's these Japanese cats that started writing new operation systems for the MPCs. They made it so you could do certain things that you could only do on the 2000 before. Now you can do it on the 1000, like multilayering stuff or stacking sounds. You couldn't do that with the original OS from Akai. Putting them snares together, so it just pops. That's a must-know trick. I don't even feel bad giving that out for free! I consider myself a drummer, if anything, out of all the instruments. Drums are the centerpiece of the whole song."
